The department was founded with undergraduate program in August 1998, the master's program in August 2000 and the doctorial program in 2003. In recent years, the output value of electric engineering and electronics industry has taken a great potion in Taiwan industrial output, and the industry plays a decisive role in Taiwan economy. The demand for human resource of electric engineering and electronics is rather keen, and all universities are aggressively setting up relevant programs. Regarding that, National Chi Nan University has set up Graduate Institute of Communication Engineering and Department of Applied Materials and Optoelectronic engineering, in addition to Department of Electrical Engineering and Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, in hope of educating more students for our country.


CThe missions of the department in the undergraduate program focus on educating fundamental human resource for electric engineering and electronics industry; the missions in the master's and doctorial program focus on educating advanced human resource for high-tech industries, matching the demand of Taiwan economy.

Electric engineering and electronics are the mainstream of high-tech industry, which dominates the value of Taiwan industrial output, so the demand for related human resource is extremely keen. Businesses in Science Park, such as IC manufacturing, IC test, communication, information, biological chip, etc. would be the opportunity of future career. In order to keep our competence, we will continue to lead in our features, interact with industries and strengthen the system design capability of our students.


We have two major groups, each with different emphasis on teaching and researching.

1: Electronics Group: VSLI Design, SOC Design, Analog IC Design, RF Circuits Design, Microelectronics Component and Material, Micro Sensor, Nano Device, Optoelectronics.

2: Systems Group: Wireless Communication, Microwave Communication, Communication Theory and Technology, Mobile Network and Computing, Control System and Theory, Digital Signal Processing, Image Processing, Speech Processing, Biometrics, Advanced SoC Design.

Our main directions of research also include IC design, which integrates electronics and system.

The undergraduate program focuses on the education of fundamental mathematics and physics as well as the core subjects of electrical engineering. In optional specialized courses, including semiconductor, electronic components, circuit design, communication, signal processing, electromagnetic wave, control and so forth,

*Graduation credit requirement for bachelor degree: 136-credits, including:

- Common courses: 13-credits.
- General education courses: 12-credits.
- Specialized required courses: 68-credits.
- Specialized optional courses: 43-credits (Credit requirement for specialized optional courses: 32-credits; English course (2-credits) is required in 1st academic year.)

*Graduation credit requirement for master degree: 25-credits, including:

- Common courses: 10-credits.
- Specialized required courses: 15-credits.

* Graduation credit requirement for doctor degree: 18-credits, including:

-The lowest credits needed: 18 credits; the project research major and seminar before passing the qualification examinations.
-Optional courses 18 credits (the specialized optional course includes Graduate Communication Engineering courses, Computer Science and Information Engineering courses, Graduate Biomedicine and Biomedical technology courses, Applied Materials and Optoelectronic engineering and also the courses from the Dept. of Electrical Engineering).
