Institute of Southeast Asian Studies
The Graduate Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (GISEAS) was establised in 1997, and has become one of the leading institutes in Southeast Asia research and teaching. The goal of GISEAS is to advance research on Southeast Asia, to educate students for future work in the region, and to enhance overseas cultural and intellectual exchanges with the institues in this region.
The Graduate Institute of Southeast Asian Studies links with well known research universities and institutions in the United States, Europe, Australia, and Southeast Asia. Regular academic exhanges, visits, and lectures strengthen faculty research and broaden students understanding of Southeast Asian affairs. The Institute also maintinas a close coorporation relatioship with the Center of Asia-Pacific Area studies at Academia Sinica, Taiwan, which offers competitive scholarship to outstanding students from the Institute.
Department of Southeast Asian Studies
In August 2013, Bachelor Program in Southeast Asian Studies is initiated and the Department of Southeast Asian Studies (DSEAS) is established.
■Program of Southeast Asia
DSEAS is the single and vital educational institution in Taiwan for the studies of Southeast Asia. It aims to advance the research carried out on Southeast Asia, to educate students for future work in the region, and to enhance cultural and intellectual exchanges among the institutes in the region. Three of its major goals are:
- To train specialists who have the abilities to analyze contemporary Southeast Asian issues.
- To provide the government and business communities with personnel capable of dealing effectively with regionally related affairs.
- To serve as a “think tank” on governmental and regionally related issues.
■Master Program of Anthropology
Anthropology can contribute to people’s understanding of the contemporary world. Specifically, the globalization of capitalism, the increasing mobilization of the world’s people and goods, and the rise of the Southeast Asia economy have in past decades reshaped the world. As a study of culture, anthropology helps us to examine such questions in the light of its cross-cultural and participatory nature. The program aims:
-To consider the full range of ways of life and cultures that humans have produced.
-To train cultural specialist in a multicultural societies.
-To strengthen students’ capacities for creation and dissemination by understanding cultural policy and cultural heritage.
The department has wide links with global famous research universities and institutions, including those in the United States, Japan, Europe, Australia, and Southeast Asia. Mutual visits and speeches from both sides help to strengthen the staffs’ researches, and to broaden students’ views in Southeast Asian studies. It also maintains a close cooperation relationship with the Center for Asia-Pacific Area Studies at Academia Sinica, which offers competitive scholarship to outstanding students from this institute.
